Festival

Am I lovely like a flower? Am I free like a bird?
Am I cool like the wind? Am I charming like the moon?

Madly blooming camellias, and aristocrats reciting poetry
If disarranged, their voices will become dancing butterflies
I writhe in delight and combine it with the fire of my wrath
I tremble in sorrow and mistake it for a picture of joy

Stretch out your wings
To a transient world coated in radiance

If the world serves light, then as fate decrees
Blow, breath of life, float to heaven and sing of the land

I'll keep wicked thoughts inside and obey the Oni
Manipulating Rakshasi and disappearing in an instant

Walk along the road to Hades
Eternally clad in dark clouds

If the world serves darkness, then as fate decrees
Burn, breath of life, drink heaven and consume the land

Born as shadow, I threw away my virtue to become evil
Born as light, I cannot escape my punishment

If the world serves light, then as fate decrees
Blow, breath of life, float to heaven and sing of the land
If the world serves darkness, then as fate decrees
Burn, breath of life, drink heaven and consume the land

Notes:

The Rakshasa (female: Rakshasi) are a group of demons whose roles are different in Hinduism and Buddhism. Rakshasa from Buddhist lore are wicked creatures who can be converted to the ways of good, whereas in Hinduism they seem to be only evil.

I italicized parts of the translation because they're sung slightly differently, and represent a separate point of view in the story.
