Phantom Stench
A story of my friend's house.

This friend, who was living in a 6-tatami one room, woke up one morning and for some reason there was a fishy stink.
'What? That smell...'

That smell was like something had rotted inside, or like it was drifting from the fresh fish for sale at the grocery store... In any case, he smelled it somewhere, and it stunk. He tried checking in his refrigerator, but the juice and frozen foods he had stocked up on weren't producing any smell, and he tried checking the bathroom but it didn't smell particularly different. As he was searching for the source of the stink, before he knew it the stink had disappeared. And the next morning he had forgotten completely about it.

Then... The same thing happened a second time, so as you'd expect he started to have a bad feeling about it, and searched for the source with more zeal than the last time, but once again the stink disappeared after a little while, though he couldn't understand why.

Once that kind of thing went on for several times, he became aware of a certain regularity. This mysterious phenomenon happened one night when I went to visit.
"Hey, what's that smell?" he asked me.
"Smell? What do you mean? What smell?"
He responded, "This! This one. This smell, it's all over my house..." and started to nose around his room.
"Got it!! It's this!!"
I looked where he was pointing, and there was a cat's food dish.
"What the heck is wrong with the cat's food?" I asked, inclining my head in puzzlement, and he nodded a few times with a meek expression.
"That strange stink was the smell of my cat's food~!" he was muttering earnestly, but I for some reason I had a bad feeling....

To this day, he still lives in that room, and says the smell is still around. And without fail, whenever he comes to my house, he nods to himself and says "Yes, I thought so, it's this~!"

I feel that it's not right.
<Coach's Obscurity>
...this is a story where I don't understand what you should've written. Ah... I've written stories about smells too, but similarly, I don't understand well each time... Moreover, in this case, it seems to have the regularity of a bulk garbage day once a month. That's once a month, what day...? You can be indifferent to it. Incidentally, if it's the smell of cat food, it must be the canned cat food and not the dry, crunchy kind, right...? Saying that, isn't it inconsequential? For you, who likes cats (but also dogs) it would seem that your friend hates cats when he feels that a cat's smell is unpleasant. Ah, I've written a comment that has nothing to do with the ghost story.
