Quarrel

A story I learned about from a friend in my hometown.

As the second son of two siblings, he went back to his parents' place for his older brother's wedding. It happened when he was renting a room in a nearby apartment building.  One night, since he had a break from work the next day, he was watching DVDs while drinking by himself at home. Then, all of a sudden he heard a man and woman quarreling in loud voices from a door just outside.
'What?!' When he checked his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock at night. What a bother at such a time... 'Ahh, at least they'll settle it pretty soon,' he thought, but even as five minutes or ten minutes passed, they weren't stopping.

He was getting pretty mad, and since he had also been drinking, he decided to have a few words with them and quietly went to the entrance, then vigorously threw the door open. But, somehow there was nobody in the hallway outside. Thinking 'Really?!' he looked all around, but there was still nobody. Furthermore, the voices he'd been hearing up until now suddenly stopped.

'Strange... what was that?' Tilting his head, he closed the door, and once again, a man and woman started swearing at each other.
'Now for sure!!' And he opened the door again, but there was still nobody...

Becoming afraid, he went back to his room as he was and got into bed. But the voices of the man and woman continued into the morning, and he didn't get a wink of sleep.

Do ghosts quarrel too? he asked me, his own face serious, but unfortunately I do not know...

<Coach's Difference>
...I'm pretty happy that the story is like a ghost story for the first time in a while. The thing that needs special attention here is a confirmation for the sequence of events. You revised it, but in the original, it's mysterious that the voices suddenly stopped the instant he opened the door, and so there was nobody there. Checking this, the sense of hearing is first and after is the sense of sight, it seems. However, he was hearing voices until just before that and because he opened the door to check "who" was chatting so much, the sense of sight is first... That is to say, the way of knowing "no-one's there?" comes first. If nobody's there, why was he hearing voices up until then? So, the sense of hearing becomes a little delayed. I'll write it once more, but since he went out to see, the surprise at "nobody" should be huge, and he should feel that first, because voices mean the existence of people, his surprise at the voice dying off isn't until a little later... Only in this way it becomes ghost story-like. I think this conversation isn't restricted to ghost stories, though. Isshi, you've already revised it and that's good, but the main point is that you have an odd mistake in the series of events. That is to say, as a ghost story the important thing is to not understand "what." Why is it important? How important is it? How should you deal with such importance? Memorize these things.

"Yes, I understand. Thank you so much, Coach!" is what I imagine you saying, your face smiling like a child... Every time you said it passionately you smiled and seemed so happy... truly...
