Coincidence

This is a story that happened when Y was in the lower grades of primary school...

A place deep in the mountains of Nagano, Y's hometown was popular for winter sports from long ago, so much that when it became winter, he'd go for skating and skiing lessons every day.

Something happened one day, after Y had returned to his house temporarily after school to put on a warm outfit. Holding the bag with his skates, he had to walk for more than one hour to the skating rink. But for some reason, on that day more than any other day when he had taken the same route to and from school, his eyes stopped on the stone Buddhist statue near the roadside.

Upon looking casually, he noticed that coins had been offered at the knees of the stone Buddhist image in the middle of three pillars. A single 1 yen coin from amongst the others had fallen closer to the roadside a little apart from the rest, as though it was flipped. Y stopped walking, picked up that 1 yen coin in his fingers to return it to its original place at the knee of the stone statue, and then walked off once again.

During winters in the countryside, the sun would shine surprisingly early. The sky was still bright when he left home, but not even 30 minutes passed when it had become so dark he couldn't see anything but for the light of street lamps in the neighborhood.

Feeling a little impatient, Y was taking a hurried pace down the road on a steep hill, when a tremendous bang sound reverberated right in front of him. Y looked and saw that a truck that had passed him a moment ago was now stopped, and the driver had opened the door and got out in confusion.
Y drew near to the driver, who quickly asked, "Are you okay? You're not injured?"

But not understanding what had happened, Y could only nod his head in agreement. The next instant he felt an uncomfortable feeling in his feet, and concentrated on seeing through the darkness, to see that a massive iron plate was laying there. It was about 5 centimeters thick in the circumference, and what seemed to be a large bundle of the same things scattered about. Somehow or other the rope on the truck roof couldn't bear the force of turning as curve, and the iron materials used in construction work had been thrown off.

Y glanced back at the driver who appeared to be flustered. Nothing at all had come of that situation for him, but his next thought was that if he had been walking just a little further ahead, without having stopped to look at the statue, he would've passed through there as he was... Wouldn't those heavy, solid iron materials have hit him directly? That was the thought that came to his mind, and he shuddered.

It became clear to him quite a long time after that. The stone Buddhist image from that time was a god called the Wisdom King Acala. Y had felt some kind of connection, so even now his phone has a severe look as it's decorated with stickers of Wisdom King Acala...

Notes: This story posed a difficulty for me in translating, because as it's the 9th story in the series, the character is named I. Obviously having a character named I doesn't work so well in English, so at a friend's suggestion I changed it to Y and made this note instead.
